Choose a broad toy fair when the buying list still spans several product families; give Shantou serious consideration when a defined product needs follow-up with a Chenghai supplier. Shanghai, Hong Kong and Shenzhen each offer broad toy comparisons, but their dates, exhibitors and brand-facing programmes make them different purchasing opportunities. The useful distinction is what you need to leave with: an existing range to order, a development partner, or a commercial agreement around a brand.
This guide compares four fairs from October 2026 to April 2027 for toy importers, retailers, distributors and private-label teams. “Games” here includes tabletop, card and toy-based play products; this is not a video-game publishing or gaming-computer guide. Infant toys can belong in the assortment, but strollers, nursery equipment, education services and theme-park installations require separate buying briefs.
Four fairs and the buying opportunities they offer
| Fair | Physical buying dates | City and venue | Why put it on the shortlist? | Main planning limit |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| China TOY Expo 2026 | 21–23 October 2026 | Shanghai New International Expo Centre | Compare multiple toy families, manufacturers and brands before narrowing a range | Concurrent baby-product and licensing shows are separate tasks, not compulsory extra halls |
| Shantou (Chenghai) Toys & Gifts Fair 2026 | 29–31 October 2026; professional-only period ends during the first half of 31 October | Shantou International Convention & Exhibition Center | Examine toys and manufacturing support with a possible Chenghai supplier follow-up | Full programme runs to 1 November; protect the first two and a half days for buying |
| Hong Kong Toys & Games Fair 2027 | 11–14 January 2027 | Hong Kong Convention and Exhibition Centre | Compare international-facing toy ranges, brands, hobby products and collectibles | Physical trade-fair dates differ from online matching and other public programmes |
| Toy & Hobby China 2027 | 31 March–2 April 2027 | Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center | Compare conventional toys, hobby ranges, collectible products and smart-toy proposals | Public admission begins at noon on 2 April; that day closes at 16:00 |
Shantou’s professional/public split is described in the municipal announcement; it does not specify an exact clock time for the changeover. Confirm the current admission arrangements before fixing appointments.
Start with the kind of order you intend to place
An existing range is the simplest buying brief, but not necessarily an immediate shipment. At China TOY Expo, Hong Kong or Toy & Hobby China, compare the actual references available for your destination and sales channel, their order quantities and replenishment terms. A display can represent a launch, a brand catalogue or a sample awaiting production. Ask which offer the quotation covers before comparing prices.
Private-label development needs a different supplier shortlist. Original equipment manufacturing (OEM) generally means production to a buyer’s requirements; original design manufacturing (ODM) generally starts from a supplier-developed design. Those labels are only a starting point: specify whether you are changing packaging, colours, parts or the play concept. A packaging adaptation and a new moulded component have different sampling and tooling implications. Clarify who manages design changes, sample approval, tooling and the final packed product, rather than assuming one company owns every step.
Brand distribution and licensing are different again. Buying a finished branded range for an agreed channel is not the same as obtaining permission to apply a character or brand to your own product. Identify the appropriate commercial counterparty and clarify the proposed market, channel, product category and approval responsibilities. A character on a sample does not establish what rights the exhibitor can offer. Keep rights discussions and manufacturing capability checks separate until both support the same product proposal.
China TOY Expo can support both supplier sourcing and brand/channel conversations; its organiser explicitly addresses overseas buying and brands developing the China market. Decide which direction of trade your own visit serves. The presence of international brands does not mean their ranges are available for private-label manufacture, and the same distinction matters at Hong Kong and Shenzhen.
Build shortlists by product family, not by the word “toy”
China TOY Expo’s published categories include plush, wooden toys, models, electronic toys and board/card games. Toy & Hobby China also spans conventional toys and adult-collector products. These broad platforms help a buyer compare several families, but the shortlist should still reflect how each product is made and sold.
- Plastic toys and building sets: prioritize the supplier’s actual role in parts production, set composition and boxed-product preparation. Piece count alone is a poor basis for comparison. Instructions, completeness and missing-part support can matter as much as the assembled model. Shantou’s combination of finished toys and manufacturing inputs makes a production-linked visit worth investigating for a defined project.
- Plush and fabric-based toys: look for control over the pattern, fabric, filling and finished appearance. A supplier strong in moulded toys is not automatically the right partner for a sewn product. If a plush item adds sound or connectivity, establish who supplies and supports those functions as well.
- Board games, card games and puzzles: examine the complete contents, rulebook language and version offered, not only the artwork on the box. Ask whether the discussion concerns manufacturing your design or distributing a finished game. An attractive prototype does not resolve the rights to its content or the work needed for your market’s language edition.
- Collectibles, figures and hobby models: compare the intended customer, finish, range continuity and commercial rights alongside the object itself. Hong Kong’s Kidult World and Shenzhen’s collectible/hobby categories are useful starting places for this search. A collector-led line may follow a release calendar quite different from an evergreen children’s toy range.
For electronic or connected play products, include language availability, dependence on an app or online service, and responsibility for ongoing support in the supplier conversation. A successful stand demonstration does not establish how the product will work after delivery. Intended age, materials and functions should also remain explicit when arranging product testing for the destination market; attending a fair is not product approval.
When a Chenghai extension adds something the fair cannot
The Shantou fair is relevant when your next decision depends on a specific toy supplier or on seeing more than a stand sample. Its published scope covers building blocks and electronic products alongside other toys and manufacturing support. That is a reason to investigate the supplier base, not to assume every exhibitor operates a nearby factory or offers the same development capability.
A useful follow-up starts with an unresolved product question. For a building set, that could be checking the complete boxed contents and instructions with the product team. For a modified toy, it might be establishing which changes the manufacturer can evaluate and what sample comes next. Send the product reference and questions before requesting a meeting, then confirm the actual address, participants and sample availability.
A showroom or product meeting can be valuable without being a factory audit. Workshop access and a production review need their own agreement. Keep the fair’s professional days for priority buying meetings, and fit a Chenghai visit around a confirmed host rather than sacrificing a useful exhibition day for an uncertain tour. The Shantou building-set sourcing article develops this follow-up using the retail set, not only its display model.
Treat concurrent fairs as conditional additions
Shanghai’s toy fair runs alongside separate baby-product, licensing and preschool shows; Toy & Hobby China likewise runs with Baby & Stroller China and Licensing China. These formats make a second task possible without automatically making it relevant. A toy retailer adding strollers still needs a separate product and supplier brief. A brand seeking a character licence needs a rights discussion, not merely another toy quotation.
For a narrow toy order, keep the time for comparisons and return meetings at the main fair. Add a concurrent event only if you can name the missing decision and the people you need to meet. The China TOY Expo combined-sourcing article explains the baby-product and licensing boundaries in detail. Those adjacent exhibitions are not counted as extra toy choices in this guide.
Choose the travel window around the next product decision
October 2026 offers a possible two-city sequence, not a compact same-city circuit. China TOY Expo ends on 23 October; Shantou begins on 29 October, leaving five intervening calendar days. Combine them when Shanghai supplies a useful broad comparison and the Shantou visit has a distinct supplier-development purpose. The additional stay and domestic transfer need justification. If the shortlist is already concentrated in Chenghai, going directly to Shantou may be more useful than repeating similar introductory meetings in Shanghai.
For Shantou, prioritize 29–30 October and the professional portion of 31 October. The full programme continues through 1 November, with its final day and a half open to the public. These are not interchangeable blocks of business-meeting time. Confirm the organiser’s current visitor arrangements and individual supplier appointments.
January and late March 2027 are separate buying trips. Hong Kong’s physical Toys & Games Fair runs 11–14 January; its online matching and other public activities do not extend those trade-fair days. Use it for a defined range review or supplier comparison early in the year, then leave time for samples and follow-up before deciding whether another exhibition is needed.
Toy & Hobby China runs 31 March–2 April in Shenzhen. The organiser’s visitor page opens the third day to the public from 12:00, with closing at 16:00. Put important comparisons and second meetings on the first two days or the final morning where possible. A later date can suit a different development milestone, but it does not guarantee that sampling, testing and production will fit your intended launch.
Before booking, fix the product family and intended user, the order model, the market and channel, the quantity and price band, and the required arrival date. Then compare current exhibitor lists against that brief. The result should be a manageable supplier shortlist with the next sample or commercial decision agreed—not a commitment to visit all four fairs.
