A packaging machine cannot be selected independently from the package it must run. Film stiffness affects feeding and sealing, bottle geometry affects handling, artwork and code position affect inspection, and case dimensions affect palletising. When these decisions are made by separate suppliers, a line may be fast on paper but unstable with the actual product and packaging specification.
Sino-Pack China 2027 runs from 4–6 March 2027 in Area B of the China Import and Export Fair Complex in Guangzhou. Its six official theme areas cover smart packaging and logistics, food and prepared-food packaging, general packaging, liquid and aseptic packaging, coding and marking, and packaging materials and products. Two co-located events add distinct layers: PACKINNO 2027 presents paper, plastic, metal, glass, textile, logistics and bio-based packaging products and materials in Area B, while Printing South China 2027 covers prepress, printing, paper containers, flexible and corrugated packaging and post-press converting in Area A. The three are most useful when one product brief connects them.
Begin with the product and distribution route
“We need a food packaging line” or “we want sustainable packaging” does not define an engineering project. Before the visit, select one representative SKU or tightly related product family and describe what happens from filling through sale and distribution.
Record:
- product form, dimensions, weight, viscosity, particles and sensitivity to air, light, moisture or contamination;
- fill temperature, cleaning and hygiene conditions;
- required shelf life and the evidence used to support it;
- target pack type, nominal fill, headspace and closure;
- primary material and any barrier, coating or sealant assumptions;
- label, direct print, sleeve, carton or other decoration route;
- SKU count, artwork changes, languages and variable data;
- planned output, batch size, shifts and changeover frequency;
- secondary pack, case count, pallet pattern and shipping environment;
- destination markets and applicable product, material, marking and recycling requirements.
Bring physical reference packs if possible. Mark what already works and what needs to change: cost, damage, leakage, shelf presence, line speed, material reduction, recyclability, transport density or consumer use. A defined failure or improvement goal produces better supplier conversations than an open request for the “latest packaging”.
Use PACKINNO to settle the package before sizing the line
PACKINNO concentrates on packaging products and materials rather than the machines that run them. For each material or package candidate, connect appearance to technical performance. A lighter bottle may reduce resin and freight but change top-load strength, panel stability and conveyor handling. A mono-material flexible structure may support a recycling objective but alter oxygen, moisture or light barrier, sealing window, stiffness and print surface. A paper-based replacement may need a coating or liner that affects food contact, moisture resistance, recyclability and forming behaviour.
Build a package specification with measurable fields:

Ask for the normal production tolerance, not only the nominal sample. A line must accept the variation that arrives across real material lots. If a supplier proposes a new material, record which filling, sealing, migration, shelf-life, drop, vibration or climate tests are required before it can replace the current structure.
Translate the package into a Sino-Pack line sequence
Once the package assumptions are visible, follow the product through Sino-Pack in operating order. Depending on the format, the sequence may include container making or web handling, unscrambling and feeding, dosing or filling, closing or sealing, leak or weight inspection, coding, labelling, cartoning, case packing, conveying, palletising and warehouse transfer.
Give each equipment supplier the same product and package sheet. Discuss the working range, not only the reference configuration:
- minimum and maximum container or pack dimensions;
- product-contact materials and cleanability;
- fill accuracy at different product conditions and speeds;
- sealing or closure parameters and reject logic;
- sensors, recipes, tooling and change parts for each SKU;
- code and label location, reading and verification;
- inspection coverage and disposition of rejected packs;
- line communication, data collection and traceability;
- operator tasks, access, safety and maintenance;
- utilities, footprint, noise and environmental limits.
The line interface matters as much as each machine. A filler may meet its rate while the capper starves or a flexible pouch jams at a transfer. Ask who specifies accumulation, conveyor control and speed synchronisation; who supplies change parts; and who owns the performance of integrated third-party machines. One vendor may deliver the whole line, or several specialists may be stronger, but the integration boundary needs a named owner.
Compare useful output, changeover and material loss
Headline speed normally assumes a particular pack, product and stable run. Build a simple operating model that reflects the buyer’s actual mix. Start with nominal units per minute, then include start-up waste, product change, format change, cleaning, artwork or coding change, planned stops, material replenishment and likely minor interruptions.
For a high-SKU cosmetics or personal-care line, changeover time and cleaning may determine weekly output more than maximum speed. A beverage line may be more sensitive to filling conditions, closure application, leakage and downstream accumulation. E-commerce secondary packaging may need variable dimensions, print-and-apply, weight confirmation and route sorting rather than one fixed high-speed format.
Ask vendors to model at least two SKUs and one changeover. Record the number of people, tools, settings, retained recipes and first-good-pack checks. Where “tool-less” changeover is claimed, identify which parts still move or need verification. Where automatic recipe change is proposed, clarify which parameters are protected, who can edit them and how a mismatch is prevented.
Material yield belongs in the same comparison. A lower-cost film with a narrow sealing window, a preform with variable neck finish or a carton with unstable crease quality can create rejects and downtime that exceed the purchase saving. Compare the package and machine as one operating cost rather than negotiating them in separate spreadsheets.
Add Printing South China when print and converting are buyer decisions
Printing South China is not an automatic addition for every end user. It becomes valuable when the buyer develops printed cartons, flexible packaging, labels, sleeves, corrugated cases or other converted formats, or when colour, finishing, short runs and artwork change materially affect the product programme.
Take the selected package structures into Area A and identify the relevant production route. A folding carton may involve prepress, colour management, printing, surface finishing, die-cutting, creasing, inspection, stripping and gluing. Flexible packaging can involve film preparation, printing, laminating, curing, slitting and pouch making. Corrugated transport packs add board grade, flute, printing, slotting, die-cutting, folding and compression requirements.
For each route, ask:
- which artwork and prepress files are required;
- how colour is specified, approved and measured;
- what registration and cut tolerances can be held in production;
- which inks, coatings, adhesives and curing conditions suit the substrate and use;
- how barcodes, variable data and inspection marks are controlled;
- what tooling, plates, cylinders or dies are needed and who owns them;
- what minimum economical run and replenishment time apply;
- how approved samples and later production lots are matched.
Bring the answers back to the machinery discussion. Print-to-cut variation affects vision inspection and label placement. Ink, varnish or laminate may affect friction, heat resistance and seal performance. A modified carton dimension can change erection, loading and case-packing settings. The aim is not to become a printing specialist in one afternoon; it is to identify the printed-package variables that the packing line must tolerate.
Use three days to close one package-to-pallet path
A focused visit can divide the work by dependency rather than by exhibition name:
- Day one — package and material: use PACKINNO to compare feasible structures, formats and supply conditions, then establish a shortlist that can be tested against the product.
- Day two — primary and secondary line: follow the shortlisted pack through Sino-Pack from feeding or forming to filling, sealing, inspection, coding, case packing and palletising.
- Day three — print, interfaces and closure: use Printing South China only for relevant printed or converted components, then revisit the strongest machinery candidates with updated material, artwork and tolerance information.
If the packaging format is already frozen and print is bought to a stable specification, most of the visit can remain in Sino-Pack. If the project is a packaging redesign, the first day should carry more weight. A converter or packaging producer may reverse the balance and spend substantial time in Printing South China. The schedule should follow the decision still open, not allocate equal hours to three events.
Define the tests that follow Guangzhou
Show-floor samples and demonstrations establish feasibility, not production acceptance. Before leaving, create a joint test matrix for the package and line. It may include material identification and dimensions, fill accuracy, seal strength or leakage, closure torque, code quality, inspection challenge sets, drop or compression, line speed, start-stop behaviour, changeover, reject handling and traceability.
State who supplies product, packaging material, artwork, tooling and known-defect samples; how much is needed; and whether the test occurs at a supplier demonstration centre, packaging converter or operating factory. The sample lot should represent normal production variation rather than a specially selected perfect batch.
For the commercial comparison, separate package unit cost from tooling, prepress, minimum order, freight and inventory exposure. Separate line equipment from options, change parts, conveyors, coding, inspection, software, integration, installation, training, acceptance and spares. Then model both on the same annual SKU and volume assumptions.
Leave with one controlled packaging specification
The most valuable output is a single file connecting the product, package, print and production line. It should contain approved and alternative material structures, critical dimensions and tolerances, artwork and code zones, process sequence, speed and changeover assumptions, inspection points, secondary packaging, pallet pattern, test plan and responsible supplier for every interface.
