Semiconductor sourcing begins with a process requirement, not a generic search for electronics suppliers. SEMICON China 2027 brings equipment, materials, software and services across the microelectronics supply chain into one Shanghai platform. Buyers can use that breadth to find candidates, but qualification still depends on process-specific data and controlled evaluation.
Map the requirement before the show
SEMICON China is scheduled for 24–26 March 2027 at Shanghai New International Expo Centre. Define the device, wafer or package process step; substrate and material; target performance; facility interfaces; contamination limits; throughput; automation; traceability; acceptance method and required support.
Use the official exhibitor directory to separate equipment makers, material suppliers, subsystem providers, metrology, factory software and service companies. Give each technical owner a shortlist rather than browsing the whole chain.

Make a three-column list: mandatory process conditions, questions open to engineering clarification and commercial preferences. A promising supplier can remain under review while data are collected, but a mismatch on a fundamental interface or material condition should become visible at the first meeting.
Plan meetings around the technical owner who can judge the answer. Procurement may lead the commercial process, but process engineering, facilities, equipment, quality, automation or packaging specialists need their own questions and decision rights.
Compare evidence at the right level
Match the evidence request to the product role. Equipment, materials, subsystems, metrology and software affect the process in different ways, so they should not share one generic supplier score.
Ask which legal entity designs, manufactures, integrates and supports the proposed product. A conference presentation or demonstration may reveal capability, but the buyer still needs data relevant to its own process and acceptance plan.
For equipment, connect the claimed process window to the proposed configuration, wafer or substrate handling, chamber or module design, utilities, footprint, automation interface and acceptance method. Throughput and uptime figures need their operating assumptions, exclusions and maintenance basis before they can support a comparison.
For materials, compare the exact grade and specification rather than a product-family name. Record critical properties, analytical method, specification limits, typical variation, impurity or contamination controls, lot size, release data, shelf life, transport and storage conditions, packaging and change notification. Identify which claims apply to a standard grade and which still require a buyer-specific formulation or trial.
For components and subsystems, define the parent tool or process, functional duty, interfaces, critical failure modes, calibration or maintenance needs and replacement strategy. Ask whether the proposed item is already used in a comparable configuration or would enter a new engineering qualification.
Map the responsibility chain: contracting entity, design owner, manufacturing site, software or integration owner, application-support team and after-sales organisation. Where group companies or partners share the work, quotations, confidentiality arrangements, change approval and service escalation should refer to the same proposed supply route.
Decide what deserves post-show evaluation
Classify leads into technical information request, sample evaluation, remote engineering review, supplier-site visit or no action. Before visiting a site, confirm that the relevant engineering, manufacturing or application work occurs there and agree what evidence can be reviewed.
For equipment, follow configuration control, critical components, assembly, software release, calibration, factory acceptance and spare-parts planning. For materials, examine raw-material control, production route, in-process data, lot release, traceability and handling of changes or deviations.
Use a staged evaluation path rather than treating the exhibition conversation as approval:
- Show meeting: confirm scope, technical fit, responsible entities and the evidence available now.
- Information review: compare datasheets, drawings, interface data, analytical results, references and declared exceptions.
- Sample, demonstration or engineering review: agree test conditions, success criteria, sample identity, data ownership and next decision.
- Supplier-site review where justified: examine the manufacturing or application process behind the proposed product and close named risks.
- Buyer qualification: complete the buyer’s own pilot, factory acceptance, incoming evaluation or process approval before release.
For a site visit, prepare one evidence list tied to the proposed configuration or grade. Equipment visits may need engineering release, incoming components, assembly, software control, calibration, test records, preservation and packing. Material visits may focus on incoming raw materials, process controls, sampling, analytical capability, lot release, retained samples, traceability and change management.
A sales office, application laboratory and manufacturing plant serve different questions. The route becomes worthwhile when the location and people available can answer the unresolved technical or delivery issue. Confirm access and confidentiality conditions before travel; sensitive areas, customer data or process details may not be available for general viewing.
Keep commercial and technical decisions connected
Record technical exceptions alongside price, lead time, installation, training, warranty, service response and parts availability. For international deployment, clarify export packaging, documentation, remote support and responsibility for local installation or compliance.
Compare commercial offers against the same configuration or grade. For equipment, separate base tool, options, installation, facilities work, acceptance testing, training, initial spares, software licences and ongoing service. For materials, align quantity basis, packaging, release documentation, sample costs, minimum orders, lead time, Incoterm and the treatment of specification or process changes.
Ask how support will work at the destination: response path, remote diagnosis, field personnel, language, parts location, calibration or preventive-maintenance needs, warranty start point and escalation for process excursions. The strongest technical option may still be difficult to deploy if responsibilities and response assumptions remain unclear.
The final supplier matrix should show process use, proposed legal and manufacturing entities, configuration or grade, technical exceptions, evidence status, sample or review stage, quotation basis, service model, next decision and owner. The useful outcome is a small set of suppliers with a defined next experiment or review, not a ranking based on booth scale.
