A tile sample is easy to carry and difficult to interpret. Its surface can show colour, texture and design, but not whether later production will hold the same shade, calibre, flatness, finish and packing quality. UNICERAMICS Expo 2027 is particularly useful because its Products Expo and Technology Expo place the sellable surface beside the materials and process systems that create it.
For an international distributor or project buyer, the strongest trip uses the four show days to define the product and manufacturing questions, then adds one or two appointment-led days in Foshan only for suppliers that remain relevant. The objective is not to tour as many showrooms as possible. It is to connect a chosen tile, slab or sanitary product to the factory, line, controls and replenishment model behind it.
Turn the project requirement into a tile specification
“Large-format stone-look tile” is not yet a buying specification. Before the fair, define where and how the product will be used:
- floor, wall, façade, countertop, furniture or sanitary application;
- residential, hospitality, retail, public or industrial environment;
- module and actual dimensions, thickness and edge condition;
- surface appearance, gloss or texture and acceptable variation;
- wet, dry, interior, exterior, freeze or high-traffic conditions;
- slip, stain, chemical, wear, load or impact performance relevant to the use;
- installation system, joint, substrate and accessory pieces;
- target standard, test method and destination-market documentation;
- order quantity, batch strategy, spare stock and expected replenishment period;
- crate, pallet, carton, protection and container constraints.
Separate aesthetic selection from technical acceptance. Designers can define visual intent and range, while the buyer and technical team set measurable conditions. Natural-looking variation may be desirable; uncontrolled mismatch may not be. Agree how many reference pieces or boards represent the accepted range rather than approving one ideal tile.
For slabs and very large formats, include handling, lifting, cutting, edge finishing, breakage and site access. A product that works in a showroom may be impractical if the contractor cannot move it through the building or process it with available equipment.
Use the Products Expo to build a controlled shortlist
The official 2027 layout separates flagship brands, innovation-focused companies, cultural and creative design, and installation or delivery systems. That structure supports several distinct tasks.
Distributors can compare assortment depth, merchandising, stock policy, territory and replenishment. Project buyers can work from a room, façade or finish schedule and identify products that meet a coordinated palette. Designers can examine surface, scale, joint and installation effect. Installers can investigate adhesives, auxiliary materials, tools and delivery systems that determine whether the specified finish can be built reliably.
At each shortlisted booth, record the exact product series, code, nominal and actual size, thickness, surface, edge, variation classification, production base and sample identity. Ask which sizes and finishes belong to the same series and whether they are made on the same line or by another site. A catalogue image and a physical sample may represent different production lots.
Request the manufacturer’s declared technical data and relevant reports, but match them to the exact product family and intended use. For project work, clarify whether tests represent current production, a specific thickness or surface, and which sampling or acceptance method will apply to the order. Build the later factory visit around unresolved production questions, not around collecting the same documents again.
Move into the Technology Expo with the shortlist in hand
The Technology Expo covers surface decoration, inks, glazes and materials; forming and firing; complete plants; kilns, presses, ball mills and transmission; deep processing; inspection, sorting, packaging, storage, automation, energy management and purification systems. This is not only for factory owners purchasing machinery. A product buyer can use it to understand which processes create the risks visible in the finished tile.
If a surface has high visual variation, examine digital decoration, glaze application and colour control. If the project requires very tight dimensions, ask how pressing, firing, rectification and sorting affect calibre. For polished or textured finishes, investigate grinding, polishing and finishing steps. For slabs, connect forming, firing, handling and deep-processing capability. For sustainability or energy questions, distinguish product-level claims from line-level heat recovery, fuel, water, waste and emissions systems.
The buyer does not need to become a ceramic engineer. The goal is to ask the finished-product supplier better questions:
- Which operations are performed at the named factory?
- What equipment or process route makes this series?
- How are shade, calibre, flatness and surface defects classified and sorted?
- What changes when the format, thickness, finish or batch size changes?
- Which stages are most sensitive to raw material, kiln conditions or tool wear?
- How are inspection results tied to carton, pallet and production lot?
Technology exhibitors can explain process options, but they do not qualify a tile supplier on the buyer’s behalf. Use what is learned to refine the factory agenda.
Divide four show days by decision level
A coherent route can use the fair as follows:
- Day one — product and design range. Establish the relevant product families and compare physical appearance against the project brief.
- Day two — technical shortlist. Revisit the strongest products, obtain controlled references and identify the manufacturing questions behind each one.
- Day three — process and installation. Use the Technology Expo and installation halls to understand decoration, forming, firing, finishing, inspection and application options that affect the shortlist.
- Day four — close supplier actions. Confirm factory identity, sample or reference boards, quotation basis, packaging, documents and which candidates justify a visit.
Factory teams buying equipment can reverse the emphasis: define bottleneck, current line data, target product and utilities before comparing machinery. A press, kiln, digital printer or polishing system should be assessed as part of a process route, with throughput, changeover, yield, energy, maintenance, spares, controls and service considered together.
Add a Foshan factory route only after the show shortlist
Foshan’s advantage is not merely that many ceramic companies have offices or showrooms there. The event itself is co-initiated by major ceramic and machinery enterprises and industry associations, and the regional network makes targeted follow-up practical. It also makes a generic tour tempting.
Build visits around confirmed production locations. A showroom meeting can finalise range, design, commercial terms and sample boards; it should not be described as a factory audit. For each manufacturing visit, confirm the company and address, product made there, relevant line, access to the process and the people needed for technical and commercial discussion.
Follow one shortlisted product through the relevant route: raw-material preparation, forming, drying, decoration, firing, finishing or rectification, sorting, inspection and packing. The exact path will vary. Compare the actual controls with the agreed specification and ask how non-conforming pieces and mixed shades or calibres are prevented from entering the shipment.
Review order realities: minimum run, line scheduling, lot size, production lead time, replacement pieces, discontinued designs, shade matching for later replenishment and storage of reference samples. For project orders, reserve spare quantities with a plan rather than assuming a future batch can match visually.
When the shortlist includes products from different Foshan-area companies, group visits by confirmed location and product mission. One day may be enough for two substantive visits; adding more often turns technical work into reception-room introductions.
Make packing and shipment part of product quality
Ceramics can pass production inspection and still arrive damaged, mixed or difficult to install. Define carton contents, piece protection, edge and corner protection, crate or pallet, stack height, strapping, moisture protection, labels and pallet identity. Large slabs require their own frame, handling and unloading plan.
Connect product code, shade, calibre, production lot and quantity across carton, pallet, packing list and inspection record. Decide whether mixed lots are permitted and how they are separated. A pre-shipment inspection can check identity, quantity, appearance, dimensions, packing and selected tests only when the sampling and acceptance rules are agreed in advance.
Also examine container loading. Weight distribution, pallet dimensions, forklift access, bracing and unloading conditions can affect both breakage and destination cost. The cheapest unit price is not useful if the pack wastes container capacity or creates site-handling losses.
Leave Foshan with a product-process-supply decision
The final decision file should link the approved visual range and technical specification to manufacturer, production site, process route, reference samples, test evidence, commercial terms, packing and replenishment plan. Open issues should have owners and dates.
