A tube buyer can visit the same Shanghai halls for two very different reasons. One team may be comparing finished steel, non-ferrous, plastic or composite tube. Another may be investing in forming, welding, drawing, heat-treatment, cutting or inspection equipment. Tube China 2026 brings these layers together from 21 to 24 September at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre.
The show becomes most useful when the buyer connects the required tube to the process that must produce it. A clear product specification should lead the route through raw materials, tube-making machinery, process tools, heat treatment, sawing or laser cutting, measurement, testing and final handling. That makes production-line selection the main task, while the concurrent wire exhibition remains an optional extension for projects that genuinely cross both industries.
Define the tube family before comparing machinery
Equipment capacity is meaningful only in relation to the product mix. Before the show, prepare a short specification for each tube family under review:
- application and the product standard or customer specification that applies;
- material grade, supply condition and incoming form;
- seamless, welded, extruded, drawn, roll-formed, plastic or composite route;
- outside diameter, wall thickness, length and allowed dimensional variation;
- mechanical, corrosion, surface and cleanliness requirements;
- end preparation, threading, bending, coating or other downstream work;
- inspection, test and traceability requirements;
- annual volume, batch pattern and likely product changes.
This separates machines that can physically process a sample from systems that can maintain the required result across the expected range. A line optimised for one high-volume diameter has different commercial value from flexible equipment serving short batches of several alloys and dimensions.
Finished-tube buyers can use the same specification to compare manufacturers and stockists. The questions then shift towards production route, mill source, heat and batch traceability, testing, finishing, certification documents, stock position and the supplier’s control over subcontracted processes.
Follow the production route through the halls
Tube China’s official product groups include raw materials and tubes, manufacturing machinery, forming technology, heat-treatment equipment, sawing and industrial cutting, process tools, measuring and control, testing, profiles, pipeline and OCTG technology, and plastic or compound pipe. Rather than visiting these groups as separate catalogues, follow the proposed production sequence.
Material preparation and forming
Start with the input: billet, bar, strip, coil, extrusion feedstock, polymer or reinforcement system. Confirm the material range assumed by the equipment supplier and the condition in which it enters the process. Preparation, straightening, edge condition, lubrication and cleanliness can affect later output even when they sit outside the headline machine.
For welded tube, map forming, welding, bead treatment, sizing and cut-off as one chain. For seamless or drawn products, identify the relevant piercing, rolling, extrusion, drawing, lubrication and intermediate treatment stages. For plastic or composite pipe, clarify extrusion, reinforcement, cooling, sizing, joining and online inspection. The purpose is not to design a plant at the booth; it is to expose missing stages and responsibility boundaries before requesting a quotation.
Heat treatment and surface condition
Tube China 2026 again incorporates Thermprocess China content, covering industrial furnaces, heat-treatment equipment and related technology. This matters when properties, dimensional stability, residual stress or downstream forming depend on a controlled thermal route.
Bring the material, product size, required condition and production rate into the discussion. Ask how the supplier controls temperature, atmosphere, time, handling and data capture across the working range. Record utilities, loading pattern, transition between product families and the method used to demonstrate process uniformity. A nominal furnace temperature tells the buyer much less than the conditions achieved by the actual tube throughout the cycle.
Surface preparation, coating, pickling, passivation or cleaning may sit with different suppliers. Identify which processes are included, which require separate environmental or utility systems, and how the line prevents damage or contamination before final inspection and packing.
Sawing, laser cutting and downstream preparation
The organiser has expanded its former sawing pavilion into Saw and Laser Cutting China. Its scope includes saws and tools, alternative separation methods, deburring, laser cutting, peripheral systems, accessories and consumables. That gives tube buyers a dedicated place to examine the point where continuous production becomes a finished length or prepared component.
Compare cutting claims using the actual material, diameter, wall, section, cut angle, burr requirement and batch pattern. Cycle time should include loading, positioning, clamping, cutting, unloading and any tool or programme change relevant to the buyer’s mix. For laser systems, include part geometry, nesting or programming, fume handling and the condition required for the next operation. For sawing, examine blade or tool life, coolant, chip handling and cut-face quality on the proposed material.
Measurement, testing and traceability
Dimensional inspection, surface and defect detection, mechanical testing and process data should be planned with the production equipment rather than added after the line is selected. Define which checks happen online, at-line and in a laboratory, and which result controls automatic rejection or process adjustment.
Ask how measurement systems cover the full diameter and wall range, how they are calibrated, and how results connect to heat, batch, machine settings and final product identity. Where a destination standard or customer approval specifies a test method, bring that requirement to the test-equipment supplier. A demonstration of detection capability is useful, but the later acceptance plan needs known reference conditions and agreed pass/fail logic.
Turn four exhibition days into one line comparison
21 September — map complete process routes
Begin with candidate line architectures, not individual machines. Ask each serious supplier to mark the incoming material, every process stage, the finished output and all third-party equipment on one flow diagram. Record line speed or throughput together with the exact product on which it is based.
By the end of the first day, identify two or three workable routes and the gaps that require specialist conversations. These may include heat treatment, tooling, cutting, inspection, material handling or plant utilities.
22 September — investigate the difficult process steps
Use the second day for the steps most likely to control quality, output or changeover time. Bring relevant drawings, material information and test requirements into meetings. Compare how each supplier handles the extremes of the product range rather than focusing on the easiest reference size.
Where several companies would supply one line, establish who proposes the overall layout, who controls the interfaces and who is responsible for commissioning. It is easier to resolve this before separate quotations create overlapping exclusions.
23 September — compare evidence and operating demands
Return to the strongest candidates with a common question sheet. Review achieved references for comparable material and size ranges, floor space, foundations, utilities, operators, tooling, consumables, maintenance access, spare parts, software and training. Separate achieved project evidence from targets for a new configuration.
Use the organiser’s exhibitor search and matchmaking system to protect pre-arranged technical meetings. A large stand is not necessarily the right place for a detailed line review; scheduling the responsible engineer gives the buyer a better chance of closing the technical gaps.
24 September — agree the post-show test route
The final day should produce a controlled next step for each shortlisted supplier. That might be a detailed process proposal, a sample trial, a reference-line visit, an engineering review or a factory visit focused on machine build and acceptance.
Define the product data and samples the buyer will provide, the configuration the supplier will use, what will be measured and when commercial revision follows. This turns the exhibition shortlist into comparable work rather than a collection of unrelated quotations.
Use wire China as a conditional extension
wire China 2026 runs on the same dates at the same venue. Its core scope is wire and cable manufacturing, finishing, process tools, materials, measurement and testing. It is not a second tube show, but the connection can help a buyer whose plant or product programme genuinely crosses both industries.
Examples include groups manufacturing both tube and wire products, equipment or tooling suppliers serving both forming sectors, and projects sharing drawing, straightening, surface-treatment, control or test questions. A cable-only or tube-only technical team will usually gain more from deeper meetings in its anchor halls than from dividing the programme evenly.

Verify equipment where the line is built or operating
A post-show factory visit is valuable when it answers a specific question about design, manufacturing, assembly, controls, testing or service. Confirm the legal entity, visit address, work performed there and equipment available for demonstration before arranging travel. Some exhibitors manufacture complete lines; others integrate purchased modules or specialise in one process stage.
For a machine-builder visit, examine engineering resources, fabrication and assembly control, bought-in component management, software and electrical documentation, internal test methods, non-conformance handling and spare-parts support as they relate to the proposed line. A reference installation can add evidence about uptime, changeovers, operator workload, maintenance and product consistency, subject to the owner’s permission and a genuinely comparable application.
Prepare a preliminary acceptance route before commercial negotiation becomes advanced. It can state the test product, material, size range, run duration, output basis, quality measurements, data to be recorded, permitted interruptions and treatment of non-conforming results. Final contractual acceptance criteria require project-specific technical and legal review, but the show is the right place to discover whether a supplier can support that level of evidence.
When a narrower visit is more efficient
Finished-tube buyers with a stable specification may concentrate on material producers, mills, finishers and stockists rather than production-line equipment. A factory upgrading one bottleneck may focus on heat treatment, cutting or inspection without mapping an entirely new line. Teams still deciding between fundamentally different product routes may need an engineering study before equipment quotations become meaningful.
Tube China supports all three missions, but they should not share one undifferentiated meeting list. The best use of the four days is to give each supplier the same product and process basis, then spend extra time where the evidence can change the investment decision.
