A blind, awning or industrial door is sold as a finished product, but its reliability depends on interfaces between fabric, structure, fittings, motor, controls, sensors and installation. R+T Asia 2027 brings those layers together at the National Exhibition and Convention Center in Shanghai from 26 to 28 May.
The show has three distinct purchasing environments: internal sun shading, external sun shading and door/gate systems. A buyer will obtain better comparisons by separating those workstreams before the trip, then deciding whether the commercial target is a finished system, private-label product, component set or production line. The 2027 event is the 22nd edition of a specialist fair operating in Asia since 2004, so its value lies in depth within these categories rather than in broad construction coverage.
Start with the installation, climate and sales model
Prepare one specification pack for each intended application. A hotel roller blind, residential pergola, warehouse high-speed door and parking barrier require different evidence even if they share a motor or control supplier.
For every workstream, state:
- project type and whether the product is sold through retail, distribution, OEM or contract installation;
- opening dimensions, mounting surface, available space and visible design constraints;
- indoor or outdoor exposure, temperature, humidity, rain, wind, salt, dust and UV conditions;
- expected operating cycles, speed, noise and service-life target;
- manual, wired, battery, solar or mains-powered operation;
- local voltage, frequency, plug, radio and connectivity requirements;
- applicable fire, electrical, machinery, accessibility, security or building requirements in the destination market;
- packaging, labelling, instructions, spare parts and installation support;
- target order volume, colour or size mix, customisation and replenishment pattern.
Add drawings, photos and a schedule of openings where the project is known. For distribution or private label, bring the intended range architecture: good, better and premium positions; standard and custom sizes; colours; control options; packaging; and target landed cost. That gives suppliers a commercial problem to solve rather than an invitation to send their entire catalogue.
Keep the three product systems separate
Internal sun shading: compare the window assembly
The official internal-shading categories cover roller, Roman, vertical, pleated, cellular, zebra, Venetian and other blind formats, alongside fabrics, tracks, fittings, drives, controls and production machinery.
Begin with the fabric specification. Record openness, visible-light transmission, glare control, blackout performance, colour, reflectance, thermal behaviour, flame performance, dimensional stability, cleanability and expected colourfastness. Ask whether the evidence applies to the exact colour, coating and construction offered, because a general material certificate may not represent every finished variant.
Then examine the assembled product. Compare tube and profile stiffness, bracket geometry, clutch or motor capacity, bottom-bar behaviour, edge control, allowable size, fabric tracking, noise and installation tolerance. Operate large and small samples repeatedly. A smooth display-sized blind does not establish how a wide or tall unit behaves near its design limit.
For private-label ranges, confirm which parts are made by the exhibitor, which are purchased, and who controls colour matching and final assembly. Ask how custom sizes enter production, how finished dimensions are checked, and how replacement fabric, motors or fittings can be ordered years later.
External shading: test the complete weather-exposed structure
Awnings, zip screens, external Venetian blinds, shutters, pergolas, canopies and shade structures face wind, rain, temperature change, corrosion and contamination. The selection cannot be reduced to fabric colour or a motor demonstration.
Bring the intended span, projection, mounting height, wall or slab construction and exposure. Ask the supplier for the design basis behind wind resistance, drainage, water management, fixing loads and safe retraction. For pergolas, follow rainwater from louvre or roof surface through gutters, joints, columns and outlets. For zip screens and roller shutters, inspect guide geometry, fabric retention, bottom seals, access for adjustment and what happens after obstruction or power loss.
Compare aluminium alloy and temper, profile thickness, surface treatment, fasteners, bearings, cables, seals and replaceable wear parts. Coastal or humid projects need a corrosion discussion that includes hidden hardware, not only visible powder-coated profiles.
Outdoor controls should cover wind, rain, sun and temperature sensors, manual override, fail-safe positions and recovery after interrupted power or communication. Establish who selects the sensor thresholds and commissions the system on site.
Doors and gates: define duty, safety and access together
R+T Asia’s door and gate section includes industrial, commercial and garage doors, roller shutters, parking systems, operators, controls, sensors, access systems and hardware. Use the actual opening and traffic pattern to compare them.
For an industrial door, specify opening size, vehicle or pedestrian flow, cycles per hour and day, required opening speed, pressure difference, temperature separation, contamination control and impact risk. For a garage door, gate or barrier, add vehicle type, queue pattern, available sweep or headroom, security level and emergency access. Fire or smoke doors require project-specific certification and coordination; a supplier’s general product range is not evidence that the proposed assembly meets the destination requirement.
Review the leaf, frame, guides, counterbalance, operator, control panel and safety devices as one system. Ask how photoelectric sensors, light curtains, safety edges, loops, radar, access control and manual release interact. Request the fault response for a broken spring, obstructed path, lost sensor, power failure and failed communication. The safe state may differ between a warehouse, hospital, car park and secure perimeter.
Maintenance access matters as much as nominal speed. Record adjustment points, consumable parts, inspection intervals, diagnostic tools, remote support, stocked spares and the skills needed for field repair. If the buyer does not control a capable installer network, a sophisticated door can become a service liability.
Decide what the supplier is responsible for
The same hall may contain finished-product manufacturers, component suppliers, automation specialists and machinery builders. Identify the commercial model before comparing prices.
Finished systems and private label
For finished products, establish who performs engineering, sizing, assembly, factory testing, packaging and installation guidance. Confirm whether the quotation includes brackets, fasteners, controls, sensors, cabling, remotes and commissioning tools. Ask for an illustrated bill of materials for the proposed configuration.
Private-label buyers also need ownership of artwork, manuals, product data, firmware or app branding, packaging tests and replacement-part coding. Review minimum quantities at three levels: overall order, product family and individual colour or size. A manageable total MOQ can still hide an impractical requirement for each variant.
Components and production machinery
Component sourcing is appropriate when the buyer already controls system engineering and assembly. Compare interfaces and tolerances, not just unit price: profile dimensions, shafts, torque, limits, connectors, radio protocols, sensor logic and mounting patterns must remain compatible across suppliers.
Machinery buyers should bring the intended product range, materials, maximum dimensions, takt time, changeover pattern, labour plan and quality checks. Ask the exhibitor to map cutting, forming, sewing, welding, assembly, programming, inspection and packing. Define which tooling, recipes, safety guarding, extraction, training, installation and acceptance tests belong in the line quotation.
Treat motors, controls and smart-home claims as an interface project
Motorised blinds, awnings, pergolas, doors and gates can connect to remotes, wall switches, sensors, building-management systems, access control, voice assistants or cloud applications. A product described as “smart” may still depend on a proprietary gateway, regional radio frequency, permanent internet connection or unsupported mobile service.
Ask suppliers to draw the control architecture and identify:
- motor and drive ratings for the actual load and duty;
- wired, radio and IP protocols, frequency band and regional approvals;
- local control when the network, gateway or cloud is unavailable;
- grouping, scenes, schedules, sensor priorities and manual override;
- commissioning tools, administrator rights and transfer to the end customer;
- firmware updates, cybersecurity responsibilities and support period;
- interfaces to BMS, fire alarm, access control or third-party home systems;
- replacement compatibility if a motor, remote or gateway is discontinued.
Use a small interoperability test where possible. Operate the proposed motor with the proposed controller and sensor, then simulate loss of power or communication. Record exact model and firmware versions behind the demonstration.
Use the three show days to narrow one complete system
26 May — compare finished systems and architectures
Start with suppliers able to explain the complete application. Review internal shading, external shading and door/gate workstreams separately. Use the opening schedule or range plan to identify feasible product families, then record the system architecture and all important assumptions.
By the end of the first day, retain a small group of complete solutions for each active workstream. Do not rank a fabric supplier, motor maker and finished-system manufacturer on one undifferentiated shortlist; they occupy different responsibilities.
27 May — investigate components, controls and manufacture
Return to the shortlisted systems with questions about fabric, profiles, hardware, drives, sensors and software. Trace each critical component to its maker and determine which substitutions require buyer approval.
If the mission includes OEM production or factory equipment, use this day for machinery demonstrations and sample manufacture. Agree the material, dimensions, settings and quality criteria before the demo. Keep the produced sample and link it to the machine configuration and cycle time.
28 May — close scope and evidence
The official final-day hours end at 3:00 pm. Schedule return meetings rather than trying to discover another hall. Give each serious supplier the same clarification list and agree what follows: revised configuration, sample, drawing, certificate set, interface document, quotation or factory visit.
Leave with two or three comparable proposals per workstream and a named owner for every open point. A stack of catalogues is not a sourcing result.
Add Home Decoration Asia only for a wider soft-furnishing range
Home Decoration Asia 2027 runs on the same dates at the same venue. The organiser presents it as a complementary platform for curtains, sheers, sofa and decorative fabrics, wallpaper, wall textiles, outdoor textiles and decoration.
It adds value when a retailer, hospitality buyer or interior-project team needs both functional window shading and a coordinated soft-furnishing range. Use R+T Asia for blind systems, mechanisms, motors and performance-led shading; use HD+ for broader curtain, upholstery and decorative-material selection.
Buyers focused on industrial doors, gates, production machinery or outdoor shading normally gain more from deeper return meetings inside R+T Asia. The other BUILD ASIA events should be added only when flooring, prefabricated construction or whole-space materials are already part of the purchasing brief—not merely because one badge provides access.
Verify the proposed manufacturer after the show
Before arranging a factory visit, confirm the legal supplier, production address and processes performed there. A showroom or sales office cannot demonstrate fabric coating, aluminium extrusion, profile finishing, motor manufacture, control-board assembly or final system testing.
Choose the visit according to the unresolved risk. For a finished blind or awning supplier, follow order entry, cutting, sewing or welding, assembly, programming, inspection and packing. For a door manufacturer, examine frame and leaf production, hardware installation, operator pairing, safety-device testing and large-size handling. For machinery, review engineering, assembly, trial material, software backup, acceptance testing and service parts.
Select samples at the factory from actual production or agreed trial material. Record model, colour, size, component versions and test status so the sample remains connected to the quotation reviewed after Shanghai.
Compare quotations as installed and supported systems
Normalise prices around the same dimensions, quantities, finish, motor and control package. Add tooling, samples, packaging, freight, duties, installation hardware, programming, commissioning, spares, training and warranty support. For project products, keep site measurement, structural fixing, wiring and installer responsibility visible even when they are outside the exporter’s scope.
Then compare change control. Custom sizes, colour substitutions, component shortages and firmware changes can alter both performance and delivery. Agree which changes need written approval, what evidence accompanies a substitute, and how the buyer can reorder an identical or compatible part later.
