For a retailer building a Chinese traditional-instrument range, a beautiful performance answers only part of the buying question. The instrument must also suit the intended player, arrive with understandable setup instructions and remain supportable when a student needs a new string or bridge. Shanghai offers an opportunity to connect the first impression at Music China with those less visible details.
Use Music China 2026 to compare makers and models on its first two, trade-only days. A prearranged meeting with Shanghai’s Dunhuang instrument maker can then be a useful extension for guzheng, erhu or pipa buyers who need a more focused audition and dealer discussion. The same detour adds little to a trip devoted to digital keyboards or Western orchestral instruments.
Keep 28–29 October for the fair shortlist
Music China runs 28–31 October 2026 at Shanghai New International Expo Centre. The organiser specifies 28–29 October for trade visitors only, while 30–31 October admit both trade and public visitors. Those last two days remain usable for business; they simply have a different visitor mix. The official planning page also provides overseas visitor pre-registration and the current admission requirements.
Put supplier introductions, model comparisons and discussions with export contacts early in the visit. The show’s scope extends from acoustic instruments and accessories to electronic and smart instruments, so a traditional-instrument buyer benefits from a defined family and customer level. A music-school starter range and a specialist shop’s performance range may use the same instrument names but require different playing characteristics, prices and support.
Before leaving a promising stand, note the exact model, included accessories and the person who can arrange a follow-up. An attractive demonstration model becomes more useful commercially when the supplier identifies which orderable version it represents. Ask where a quieter audition can take place rather than assuming that every maker will host buyers outside the exhibition.
Dunhuang gives the extension a concrete destination
Shanghai No. 1 National Musical Instruments Factory, the company behind the Dunhuang brand, lists guzheng, pipa and erhu among the traditional instruments it makes. Its official address is 400 Lianming Road, Minhang District, Shanghai. This is a relevant contact for those instrument families, not a general-purpose destination for every Music China buyer.
Ask the company in advance whether the appropriate sales or technical team can meet you, which shortlisted models will be available, and whether the meeting is in a showroom or includes any workshop access. This is an appointment candidate, not an endorsement, a confirmed 2026 exhibitor or a publicly bookable factory tour. The company website also provides dealer and authenticity resources, which can help frame questions about a proposed selling relationship.
SNIEC is in Pudong and the company’s published address is in Minhang. Treat the appointment as a separate half-day across Shanghai, with the exact route checked after the meeting location is confirmed. A slot on 30 or 31 October can preserve the trade-only days, provided the company accepts it. Staff may still be occupied with the exhibition, so keep a fair-based follow-up available if an outside meeting cannot be arranged.
Make the second audition answer a retail question
A useful follow-up is more than another performance. Bring the model list and, where possible, the player or teacher who will assess the instruments. Compare the same musical passage under similar conditions and ask to hear the instrument without amplification where practical. This does not create a laboratory test; it makes it easier to notice whether an apparent difference comes from the instrument, the player or the presentation.
For a guzheng range, discuss the bridges and string set supplied with each model, how they are identified for replacement, and what setup guidance a new owner receives. Dunhuang’s official site includes teaching material on strings, bridge placement and unwanted noise. Those topics are useful prompts for a retailer deciding how much support it can realistically offer after delivery, rather than evidence that every service is included in a wholesale order.
For erhu or pipa, ask the maker to explain the intended player level, included accessories and the maintenance instructions for the specific model. Student purchases favour a clear route from unpacking to lessons; a performance-focused buyer may give more time to the individual instrument’s response. Record that distinction before requesting prices, so that an entry-level teaching order does not quietly turn into a premium-model comparison.
Bring home a range you can explain and support
The appointment earns its place when it produces a clear model-and-sample list, a repeatable accessory order and answers about packing, setup and after-sales contacts. If authorised dealership is part of the plan, ask the manufacturer to explain its current arrangements for your market and obtain the relevant written terms. A logo or an old dealer letter is not a current agreement for your business.
Agree which exact instrument will be supplied as the evaluation sample, how it will be packed and which instructions travel with it. Keep observations from the audition beside that model reference. This connects the listening experience to the eventual order without treating a single well-presented sample as proof that every instrument will perform identically.
If the requested models, a suitable audition space or the right contact will not be available, keep the time at Music China and arrange the detailed comparison later. For a traditional-instrument retailer, the success of the Shanghai extension is a better-supported buying decision—not the number of workshops visited.
