A marine component rarely succeeds on specification alone. It has to fit a vessel’s class and flag requirements, available space, power and cooling balance, control architecture, installation sequence, delivery yard and maintenance plan. Marintec China 2027 is unusually useful for this work because shipowners, shipyards, equipment makers, classification organisations and technology providers meet across one broad maritime platform.
The best way to use the four-day show is to arrive with one defined vessel or retrofit project. That gives every propulsion, electrical, automation, deck-equipment or environmental-system meeting the same technical basis. It also turns the exhibition from a catalogue search into a place to resolve interfaces, responsibilities and evidence gaps before a shortlist moves to yards or supplier sites.
Start with the vessel, not the equipment list
Prepare a one-page project basis that suppliers can understand without disclosing unnecessary commercial information. Include:
- newbuild, conversion, retrofit or replacement project;
- vessel type, principal dimensions, deadweight or capacity and operating profile;
- class society, flag, target notation and applicable owner standards;
- route, climate, port constraints, duty cycle and expected annual operating hours;
- fuel or energy basis and the project’s decarbonisation objective;
- design stage, contracting model, delivery yard and target schedule;
- space, weight, centre-of-gravity, noise and vibration constraints;
- available electrical load, cooling, ventilation, fuel, exhaust and data interfaces;
- required documentation, approvals, commissioning, training and lifetime support.
For a retrofit, add the existing maker and model, serial and service history, as-built drawings, known faults, dry-dock window and the physical route for removing old equipment and bringing the replacement onboard. A technically suitable unit is not a workable retrofit if foundations, cabling, piping or access cannot be changed within the vessel’s time and budget.
Define the decision required from the trip. It may be a maker shortlist, a concept-feasibility check, an alternative-fuel package, an automation upgrade, a service partner or a complete yard-and-equipment proposal. Different decisions require different people and evidence.
Break the project into connected work packages
Marintec’s scale makes random hall walking costly. Divide the project into packages, while recording the interfaces between them:
- Hull, naval architecture and outfitting. Arrangement, structural integration, foundations, accommodation or passenger spaces and stability implications.
- Propulsion and energy. Main and auxiliary engines, propulsors, gearboxes, shafting, batteries, fuel systems, alternative-energy equipment and energy management.
- Electrical and automation. Generation, distribution, drives, bridge and navigation systems, sensors, alarm and monitoring, vessel control and cybersecurity.
- Deck, cargo and mission equipment. Cranes, winches, mooring, cargo handling, fishing, offshore or other vessel-specific systems.
- Safety and environmental performance. Fire safety, lifesaving, ballast water, emissions, waste, water treatment and condition monitoring.
- Maintenance and service. Spares, field service, remote support, repair routes, training, documentation and obsolescence management.
One supplier may cover several packages, but that does not make it responsible for every interface. Mark who designs, supplies, approves, installs, tests and warrants each boundary. The owner, designer, yard, system integrator and equipment maker should not leave the same task in five different assumptions.
The 2027 organiser brochure highlights maritime decarbonisation, digitalisation, the Energytec zone and cruise-and-ferry applications. Those themes are useful only when translated into the project’s own work packages. A hydrogen, battery, wind-assist or solar concept, for example, still needs a credible storage or generation basis, safety concept, power-management logic, class path, bunkering or charging plan and operating case.
Ask each supplier to solve the same interface questions
Give shortlisted exhibitors a structured meeting sheet before the fair. Product questions should be followed by integration questions:
- What exact configuration is proposed, and which options are excluded?
- Which vessel and operating assumptions were used for sizing?
- What are the power, fuel, cooling, ventilation, exhaust, foundation and control interfaces?
- Which drawings, calculations, certificates, type approvals and test records exist for that configuration?
- What still requires project-specific class, flag, owner or yard approval?
- Who supplies switchboards, converters, piping, cabling, sensors, controls and interface engineering?
- What is factory-tested, harbour-tested and sea-trialled, and who attends each stage?
- Which parts are manufactured by the contracting entity and which are sourced from others?
- Where are spares, technicians and authorised repair capabilities located for the intended trading area?
- What changes if the delivery yard, fuel basis or vessel schedule moves?
Do not treat a type approval as approval of the whole vessel installation. Confirm the issuing body, scope, exact product variant, validity and project conditions, then let the relevant class society, flag administration and appointed technical parties determine what the project requires.
For digital products, include data ownership, onboard and shore architecture, connectivity loss, update control, cybersecurity responsibility, third-party interfaces and service continuity. A dashboard demonstration says little about sensor quality, data access, alarm governance or what happens when the subscription or vendor support ends.
Use the four days as a decision sequence
Day one — map packages and missing interfaces. Walk the relevant halls to identify makers, integrators, yards, class organisations and service providers. Build a longlist, but do not spend every meeting collecting general introductions.
Day two — hold the main technical meetings. Work through the same project basis with the strongest candidates. Bring the owner or operator, naval architect, electrical or machinery specialist and commercial lead where their decisions are needed.
Day three — connect systems and responsibilities. Return to propulsion, electrical, automation, environmental and deck-equipment suppliers with interface findings. Meet yards, designers or integrators to test who can own unresolved boundaries. Use the Senior Maritime Forum and specialist zones to sharpen questions, not as proof that a solution is ready for the project.
Day four — close the evidence plan. Agree which drawings, calculations, certificates, reference installations, quotations, site meetings and tests will follow. Record the responsible person and date for each item. A business card without a next action is not a sourcing result.
Daily reconciliation matters. A change to engine fuel, battery capacity, propulsor, vessel control or hotel load can affect space, weight, cooling, fire protection, cabling, class work and schedule across several packages.
Treat newbuild and retrofit decisions differently
A newbuild offers more freedom to optimise the arrangement, but early equipment selection can lock the yard and designer into interfaces before the vessel design is mature. Ask which data must be frozen, when it is needed and what happens if the owner changes configuration.
A retrofit starts from physical and operational constraints. Request a survey list before accepting a firm proposal: equipment-room dimensions, foundations, lifting points, removal path, pipe and cable routes, switchboard capacity, cooling, ventilation, hazardous areas, control interfaces and the condition of retained systems. Confirm whether laser scanning or onboard measurement is necessary and who owns the resulting model.
The commercial scope should separate equipment supply from engineering, survey, removal, installation, integration, class documentation, factory acceptance testing, commissioning, harbour or sea trials, crew training, spares and warranty. A lower equipment price can disappear once these responsibilities are added.
For reference vessels, compare vessel type, operating profile, class, configuration and service history with the buyer’s project. A successful installation on a different duty cycle or under different rules is useful evidence, not a direct guarantee.
Extend the Shanghai trip through confirmed technical meetings
Marintec China is already a four-day, international event. The trip should be extended only for a defined evidence gap. The most useful next stop may be a shipowner or operator meeting, a designer or system integrator, a class discussion, a yard engineering session, or a supplier factory and test facility in Shanghai or the wider Yangtze River Delta.
Confirm the site, people, project relevance, confidentiality requirements and agenda before travel. A factory visit should follow the proposed product through engineering, incoming inspection, production, traceability, test setup, non-conformance handling, documentation, packing and service support. For a yard or reference vessel, access may be restricted and should never be assumed.
Bring open-interface and evidence lists from the show. The purpose of the follow-up is to resolve named questions: witness a test capability, review a project team, check integration experience, examine a reference installation or align owner, yard and supplier responsibilities. General hospitality adds little to the sourcing decision.
Leave with one integrated project record
The output should not be eight unrelated supplier shortlists. Build one project record linking each work package to configuration, interfaces, approval route, responsible party, evidence received, open points, commercial scope, schedule risk and next gate.
