LOUPE South China 2026: Plan a Label and Packaging Converter Visit

Use live print and converting demonstrations at LOUPE South China to define a real packaging job, then verify shortlisted converters in Dongguan.

A packaging sample can look finished while concealing most of the decisions that determine whether it will run reliably. The same artwork may behave differently on another film, adhesive, ink system, press width or finishing sequence. A quotation can also come from a converter, a material distributor, an equipment company or a sales office with very different control over production.

LOUPE South China 2026 takes place from 2 to 4 December 2026 at Shenzhen World Exhibition & Convention Center. Formerly Labelexpo South China, it has widened its scope beyond labels to the converging technologies used for mid-web flexible packaging—particularly shrink sleeves and pouches—and inline folding-carton converting. The organiser’s 2026 programme brings running presses and materials together with prepress, dies, inks, coatings, inspection, RFID, finishing, automation and workflow software.

That concentration makes LOUPE useful for more than collecting printer catalogues. A brand owner can use it to understand how a proposed pack will actually be produced before choosing a converter. A printing company can compare the equipment, materials and controls needed to add a new format. In both cases, the most productive extension is an appointment-led visit to the shortlisted production site, using the same representative job discussed at the exhibition.

Bring a production job, not a request for “better packaging”

Prepare one compact job pack for each priority SKU or product family. It should contain the artwork or dieline revision, physical sample if available, finished dimensions, substrate construction, expected annual and order quantities, number of SKUs, colour reference, variable data, finishing sequence, packing method and destination market. Mark which fields are fixed and which may be changed to improve cost or manufacturability.

The technical brief then changes with the format.

Pressure-sensitive labels

State the face stock, adhesive, liner or linerless requirement, container surface, application temperature, service temperature, moisture or chemical exposure, label-application speed and removal behaviour. Include barcode, QR, serialisation, tamper evidence or RFID requirements where relevant. A premium finish may combine foil, varnish, embossing, screen effects or complex die cutting; list the required sequence instead of asking only whether the supplier “can do” each process.

Shrink sleeves and pouches

Define the film or laminate structure, barrier and seal requirements, product-fill conditions, retort or sterilisation exposure if applicable, coefficient-of-friction needs, pouch style, zipper or spout, print repeat and finished roll or pouch presentation. For a shrink sleeve, include the container geometry and expected shrink curve. A flat proof cannot show whether graphics remain correctly positioned after shrinking around the real shape.

Folding cartons

Provide board grade and caliper, grain direction, structural drawing, crease and fold requirements, glue areas, windows, inserts, coding, security features and packing-line constraints. If the project depends on inline production, identify which printing, coating, embellishment, cutting, creasing, stripping and inspection stages are expected in one pass. This is more useful than treating “inline” as a general promise of lower cost.

When the intended packaging will touch food, medicine or cosmetics, add the product-contact relationship, barrier construction, filling process, storage conditions and destination-market requirements. The converter can then identify the ink, coating, adhesive, substrate declarations and tests that apply to the actual construction rather than handing over a general certificate unrelated to the job.

Read the show as three connected production systems

LOUPE’s distinctive feature is the overlap between technologies once associated mainly with narrow-web labels and a wider range of package-printing work. Buyers should still keep the three production systems separate while walking the floor.

The label route connects digital and conventional presses with substrates, prepress, dies, finishing, inspection, overprinting, application, RFID and security. It is particularly relevant when SKU proliferation, personalisation or serialisation makes changeover and data handling as important as nominal press speed.

The flexible-packaging route focuses on mid-web work such as shrink sleeves and pouches. The organiser highlights inline flexo, digital printing on film and paper, pouch making, slitting and rewinding, barrier coatings, mono-material structures, automation and carbon-data capture. Here the production question extends beyond print quality into web handling, curing or drying, lamination or coating, seal performance and roll or pouch conversion.

The folding-carton route centres on inline converting using digital, hybrid, flexographic or rotary-offset systems, together with coating, cutting, creasing, inspection, security and plant-management tools. It suits work where shorter runs, multiple versions or high-value effects may justify a different route from a conventional large-format carton line.

A buyer with only one format should spend most of the visit inside that system. The crossovers matter when a product family genuinely spans them—for example, a bottle using a pressure-sensitive label, a refill pouch and a folding carton—because colour, data, traceability and brand control may then need to remain coherent across different constructions and suppliers.

Turn a live demonstration into comparable evidence

Running equipment is one of the show’s strongest assets, but a demonstration is meaningful only when its conditions are recorded. Before the event, ask priority exhibitors whether they can run or review a representative substrate and job. If the exact material cannot be used, identify the differences between the demonstration and the intended production.

Record the press and configuration, web width, substrate, ink or toner, colour set, speed, drying or curing method, registration tolerance, inspection settings and finishing stages. Note the amount of material used during setup, the time required to change from the preceding job, the point at which acceptable output begins and how defects are removed or marked. For variable data, follow the file from input through RIP or workflow, print, inspection and reconciliation.

Take samples from the beginning, stable middle and end of the run rather than accepting only the operator’s preferred sheet or roll. Agree what will be measured after the show: colour, registration, barcode readability, adhesion, rub resistance, scuffing, blocking, seal strength, shrink distortion, crease quality or other job-specific characteristics. Keep the machine settings and material batch with each sample so the result remains traceable.

For equipment investment, calculate output around the expected job mix. A fast press may lose its advantage across many short runs if plates, dies, colour setup, cleaning, substrate changes or offline finishing dominate the schedule. For finished-packaging sourcing, the same exercise reveals whether a converter’s proposed process is suited to the SKU count and order rhythm rather than merely capable of producing one attractive sample.

Establish who will actually produce the order

LOUPE brings several roles into one hall. Press and finishing-equipment manufacturers sell production capability; substrate, ink, coating and adhesive companies define part of the material system; software and inspection suppliers control data and defects; converters manufacture labels or packs; distributors and agents may represent any of them. These roles are complementary, but they should not be scored as though they offer the same contract.

For each serious finished-packaging candidate, record the legal quotation entity, actual converting site, proposed press and line, processes performed internally, regular subcontracted operations and the site that made the displayed samples. Ask whether the quotation covers artwork adaptation, plates or cylinders, dies, proofing, colour standards, setup waste, testing, packing and freight. Separate reusable tooling from one-time setup charges and clarify who owns and stores each item.

For an equipment project, identify the manufacturer, system integrator and local service entity. Establish which parts of the proposed line are made, bought or integrated by each party; what production reference can run a comparable substrate; who commissions the line; and who responds when press, inspection, finishing and workflow systems interact badly. The relevant factory visit may therefore be an equipment assembly site, a demonstration centre or a converter reference—not automatically the exhibitor’s nearest office.

Build the factory route around the unresolved risk

Shenzhen World is in Bao’an, on the side of Shenzhen facing Dongguan. Dongguan’s 2025 policy for the printing industry identifies Tangxia, Dongcheng, Qiaotou and Shipai as towns or districts with an established packaging-printing base and supporting supply chain. Qiaotou’s environmental-packaging cluster has also been recognised at provincial level and is described by the local government as spanning packaging machinery, materials, design and production.

These facts justify a regional search; they do not turn every factory in those locations into a suitable appointment. Select the site by process and job match. A label converter using the proposed adhesive and finishing sequence, a flexible-packaging plant with the relevant lamination and pouch-making route, and an inline-carton operation answer different questions. Confirm the legal entity, address, equipment, representative product and technical host before putting the visit into the itinerary.

At the factory, follow the same SKU discussed at LOUPE through:

  • artwork receipt, preflight, colour separation and approval;
  • plate, cylinder, screen, die and digital-file control as applicable;
  • incoming substrate, ink, coating and adhesive identification;
  • setup, first-piece approval and in-process colour or registration control;
  • printing, curing or drying, lamination, coating and finishing;
  • inspection settings, defect marking, removal and reconciliation;
  • slitting, rewinding, pouch making, cutting, creasing, gluing or packing;
  • batch records, retained samples, non-conformance handling and change notification.

Choose one recent production lot and reconcile its material batches, approved artwork, line record, inspection result and finished label. For repeat orders, ask how the converter controls colour and tooling across different dates, machines or plants. For regulated or security-sensitive work, trace access to artwork and variable data as carefully as the physical material.

Compare total job economics

Unit price alone obscures many packaging costs. Build a comparison using the same demand pattern: quantity per SKU, order frequency, approved overrun, setup waste, plates or cylinders, dies, proofing, testing, packing, freight and inventory exposure. Include the cost of artwork changes and obsolete stock when product information or regulations change.

Digital or hybrid production may be attractive for many versions and short runs, while conventional production can become more efficient at stable volume. Inline finishing may remove handling and work-in-progress, but only if the required effects and inspection can remain controlled at production speed. The useful answer comes from the buyer’s SKU and replenishment pattern, not from a universal claim that one process is newer or cheaper.

Request quotations in a form that keeps these assumptions visible. If suppliers recommend different constructions, compare both the commercial result and the functional evidence. A thinner or mono-material structure may reduce material use, for example, while still requiring proof that barrier, sealing, machinability and shelf-life needs are met for the packed product.

A realistic Shenzhen–Dongguan schedule

The show runs from Wednesday 2 December through Friday 4 December. A workable route could use:

  • 30 November or 1 December: one pre-arranged converter or technology visit for an existing priority project;
  • 2 December: map the three production systems, confirm company roles and book specific demonstrations;
  • 3 December: observe representative runs, collect controlled samples and compare process assumptions;
  • 4 December: close technical gaps, agree quotation inputs and select the sites that can resolve remaining risks;
  • 7 December: visit one or two confirmed Shenzhen or Dongguan production sites with the relevant technical and quality staff present.

Leaving a conditional post-show slot is more realistic than promising several factories before the exhibitor evidence has been reviewed. The final route may contain only one site if that site resolves the most important uncertainty; the value lies in following the right job deeply rather than covering the most addresses.

Use LOUPE to connect the sample with the process

LOUPE South China is no longer only a label exhibition under a new name. Its useful distinction is the deliberate convergence of label production, selected flexible-packaging formats and inline carton converting, supported by running machinery and materials that can be tested. That gives buyers a practical place to examine how print, data, finishing and inspection fit together across a packaging family.

The exhibition should produce a controlled job brief, recorded demonstration evidence and a shortlist in which every company’s role is clear. The regional factory route then tests whether the selected converter or technology provider can repeat that result with the intended materials, people and quality controls. Together, those two stages turn an attractive package into a sourcing decision that can survive production.
