ITMA ASIA + CITME 2026: How to Plan a Textile Machinery Investment Visit

Compare textile equipment against real materials, process targets and acceptance criteria, then organise focused trials and factory follow-up.

Textile machinery is purchased for a material, product mix and production target—not for its exhibition demonstration alone. ITMA ASIA + CITME 2026 spans the textile manufacturing chain, so the strongest visit follows one intended process from input fibre to finished output and identifies where evidence is still missing.

Map the intended process before choosing halls

The show runs from 20 to 24 November 2026 at the National Exhibition and Convention Centre in Shanghai. Its product index covers spinning and man-made fibre, weaving, knitting, printing, dyeing and finishing, nonwovens, garment machinery, recycling, testing, software and automation, with new attention to composites and production automation.

Prepare a process map showing material, preparation, each transformation, inspection, waste, utilities and output. Add the actual product range, lot sizes, target capacity, quality limits and available labour. This becomes the route through the exhibition.

Decide what kind of investment question the show must answer

A clear investment question prevents technology scouting from being mistaken for a purchase-ready project. It also helps suppliers decide whether to offer a standard machine, a process trial, an integrated concept or a longer development programme.

Compare performance on a common basis

For each candidate, record material specification, machine configuration, speed, efficiency assumption, changeover, waste, energy, water, air, floor space, operator needs and maintenance. Ask which figures come from continuous production, customer references or a controlled demonstration.

Machines shown with different fibres, yarn counts, constructions or finishes cannot be compared by headline output. Request the operating conditions behind every important claim.

Use saleable output as the comparison whenever possible. Rated speed may not reflect piecing, doffing, cleaning, style change, shade change, minor stops, quality sorting or downstream waiting. Ask how efficiency was calculated, over what run length and with which material range.

Quality and consumption belong in the same record. Depending on the process, track irregularity, defects, breakage, shade variation, dimensional stability, first-quality yield, waste, water, energy, compressed air and chemicals. A faster machine that produces more off-quality material or shifts the constraint downstream may weaken the investment case.

Connect machinery across process interfaces

A faster upstream machine adds little if downstream preparation, inspection or finishing becomes the bottleneck. Record package format, tension, moisture, chemical condition, data interface and quality measurement at every handover.

Clarify whether one supplier can integrate the line or whether the buyer will coordinate several specialists. Name the party responsible for combined output, controls, safety, installation and acceptance.

At every handover, write down both the physical and information interface. A package, roll or batch must arrive in an acceptable condition; recipe, quality and production data must also remain traceable. Where several suppliers are involved, clarify who defines the common data structure, line control, abnormal-state response and production reporting.

For retrofits, add the existing mill to the interface map. Floor loading, foundations, ventilation, drainage, power, compressed air, water quality, chemical handling, material flow and shutdown time can determine whether an attractive machine is practical at the intended site.

Plan trials before the show ends

Bring representative material data and, when practical, reserve sample trials with priority exhibitors. Agree input, settings, target output, measurement method and sample quantity. Record manual intervention and waste as well as speed and quality.

For custom development, confirm who supplies trial material, tooling, programs and test reports. A trial should answer a defined risk, not simply reproduce the supplier’s standard demonstration.

Record how representative the trial really is. A short run on prepared material can screen a concept, but may not reveal batch changes, contamination, wear, shade transition, operator intervention or stability across a full production cycle. Define which question the show trial answers and which evidence must wait for a longer pilot or reference-site review.

Agree how samples will be evaluated after the show. Identify the laboratory or team, conditioning method, test standard, acceptance limits and comparison material. Visual judgement remains important for many textiles, but it should be connected to named defects, shade standards, handle expectations and measurable performance where relevant.

Use factory visits to verify repeatability

Post-show visits can examine assembly, component sourcing, software ownership, test facilities, quality controls, spare parts, service staffing and project management. For a reference installation, focus on comparable materials and operating conditions.

Confirm the legal entity, actual site and evidence expected before travelling. One visit linked to an open technical question is more useful than several general tours.

At the supplier site, meet the project, application and service teams likely to support the investment. Review machine configuration control, critical component sourcing, software and recipe ownership, documentation, recommended spares, technician availability and escalation. For a reference mill, compare material, product mix, operating hours and local conditions before treating its results as transferable.

Use the five show days deliberately

  • Before arrival: freeze the process map, representative materials and priority supplier meetings.
  • Day 1: compare process architectures and locate the main technology families.
  • Days 2–3: hold structured machine, automation and process meetings; collect common performance inputs.
  • Day 4: revisit finalists with trial, integration, utility and service questions.
  • Day 5: close evidence gaps, assign post-show trials and confirm targeted supplier or reference visits.

A focused single-machine purchase may need fewer days. A mill-wide process change, multiple product families or a utility-intensive finishing investment can justify the full programme and a cross-functional team.

Leave with a staged investment decision

Issue shortlisted suppliers the same controlled requirement. Ask them to state configuration, assumptions, exclusions, utilities, interfaces, trial plan, delivery, commissioning, training and acceptance criteria.

Where a quotation is appropriate, ask candidates to separate base machine, options, tooling, automation, software, installation, utilities, commissioning, training, spares and service. What the mill team should take away

A useful visit should produce:

  • an updated process map showing feasible technologies and remaining constraints;
  • a shortlist tied to exact materials, constructions, finishes and production targets;
  • comparable performance, quality, waste and utility assumptions;
  • named owners for machine, process, data and line-integration interfaces;
  • representative trial plans and a clear path from screening to pilot and acceptance;
  • site, installation, service and spare-parts questions for each serious candidate;
  • post-show studies or visits connected to specific investment risks.

That record lets production, textile technology, quality, utilities and purchasing review the same project. It also prevents the team from trying to reconstruct a complex machinery decision from videos, brochures and unlinked conversations after returning home.
