interpack China 2026: How to Source and Verify a Complete Packaging Line

Plan a product-led route through the Shanghai packaging fair, compare complete line concepts and prepare meaningful supplier follow-up.

Packaging decisions connect product protection, line speed, materials, labour, logistics, retail presentation and compliance. The event previously known as SWOP becomes interpack China 2026 in 2026. Its wide coverage helps buyers compare options, provided that they start with a real product and a complete line requirement rather than a list of individual machines.

Begin with the packaged product

interpack China runs from 16 to 18 November 2026 at Shanghai New International Expo Centre. The organiser positions it across food, beverages, confectionery, bakery, pharmaceuticals, cosmetics, non-food consumer goods and industrial products, with packaging materials, equipment, products, design and related solutions.

Define the product, fill characteristics, pack format, target shelf life, output, SKU range, destination market, storage and transport conditions. Add the commercial limits: available floor space, labour, utilities, budget, launch date and expected growth. These facts determine which exhibitors are relevant.

Match the visit to the packaging decision

Buyers at different project stages need different outputs from the same fair.

This prevents a buyer at the concept stage from demanding false quotation precision, and helps a mature project avoid returning with another collection of equipment ideas rather than answers to its open risks.

Compare line concepts, not isolated machines

A filler, sealer, labeler or case packer can perform well alone and still fail at its interfaces. Map product preparation, feeding, primary packaging, inspection, coding, secondary packaging, palletising and data capture.

For each proposal, record rated and realistic speed, changeover, reject handling, cleaning, material tolerances, accumulation, controls, safety and operator tasks. Ask who owns integration and guarantees the combined output. A lower machine price may leave more engineering and commissioning work with the buyer.

Define output in terms that reflect the product mix. Maximum cycles per minute on one stable SKU is different from saleable packs per shift after changeovers, cleaning, minor stops, quality rejects and replenishment. Ask suppliers to state the product, material and operating assumptions behind every throughput figure.

Interfaces need named owners. Record who supplies conveyors, sensors, line controls, recipes, coding signals, inspection logic, reject confirmation, production data, guarding and recovery after a stop. “Ready for integration” is only useful when the signals, documents and acceptance responsibilities are clear.

Follow the pack through materials and equipment

Use the material zones to test assumptions made in equipment conversations. Film, tray, bottle, closure, carton, label and adhesive choices affect sealing windows, line speed, barrier, recyclability, appearance and cost.

Bring representative specifications and, where practical, product or material samples. Ask equipment suppliers which material variation their process accepts, and ask material suppliers which converting and filling conditions support their claims. This cross-check exposes incompatible assumptions early.

Consider distribution and consumer use as part of the same system. A lighter pack may perform well on the line but lose compression strength in transit; a stronger seal may frustrate opening; a premium decoration may slow changeover or complicate recycling. The preferred option must balance line performance with protection, logistics, shelf presentation and use.

Prepare a common supplier scorecard

Use the same decisive fields for every candidate: product contact materials, capacity basis, changeover time, cleaning method, utilities, controls platform, inspection, spare parts, service coverage, reference applications, lead time and acceptance testing.

For regulated products, include documentation, validation support and applicable destination-market requirements. Exhibition discussions can establish capability and scope; they do not replace the buyer’s compliance and qualification process.

Add total-cost fields before ranking candidates: format parts, tooling, software, installation, utilities, consumables, recommended spares, preventive maintenance, training and service travel. Material yield and giveaway can outweigh a modest machine-price difference over time. The fair will not provide every final number, but it should reveal which cost categories each proposal creates.

Cleaning and changeover deserve their own evidence. Ask which steps are automatic or manual, what access is required, how recipes and settings are controlled, and what must be verified before restart. For products with hygiene, allergen, contamination or mix-up risks, the buyer’s quality team should define the required cleaning and line-clearance basis.

Arrange evidence-led follow-up

The organiser provides exhibitor search and matchmaking. Contact priority suppliers before travel and request a meeting with someone able to discuss the application. After the show, visit only facilities connected to a real open question: sample trials, line integration, factory acceptance testing, software ownership, parts production or service capacity.

Send the same requirement and sample basis to shortlisted suppliers. A useful trial records input material, settings, speed, rejects, output quality and any manual intervention, rather than relying on a polished demonstration.

For a complete line, separate a product trial from project acceptance. A trial can show that a material and machine concept is promising. Factory acceptance testing should then use agreed products, formats, duration, output, quality criteria and allowed stops before shipment. Site acceptance adds installation, local utilities, line interfaces and the real operating team.

Use supplier visits to meet the engineers and service people who would execute the project. Review application testing, assembly, controls ownership, project management, documentation, spare-parts practice and escalation. A relevant reference line is useful when its product range and operating conditions genuinely resemble the buyer’s case.

A focused three-day route

  • Day 1: compare complete line concepts and identify the strongest integration approaches.
  • Day 2: follow product, material, inspection, coding and automation interfaces; hold scheduled technical meetings.
  • Day 3: revisit finalists with common scope, trial and acceptance questions; assign post-show evidence.

Single-machine projects can use a shorter route. A complete line, new pack format or regulated product usually needs several workstreams and pre-arranged meetings to make the three days productive.

Leave with a staged project plan

Classify candidates as complete-line integrator, machine specialist, material supplier, inspection provider or benchmark. Record interfaces and unresolved responsibilities between them.

  • comparable throughput, changeover, cleaning, material-tolerance and total-cost assumptions;
  • trial plans using representative product, materials and acceptance criteria;
  • defined FAT, SAT, service and spare-parts questions;
  • supplier visits or concept studies linked to specific project risks.

That package allows operations, engineering, quality and purchasing to review one investment case. It also gives suppliers enough structure to propose genuine alternatives without weakening the basis of comparison.
