A tire sidewall can carry a brand, size, load and speed marking, yet it does not tell an importer which legal entity made the tire, at which plant, from which approved specification, or whether the same factory will supply the commercial order. Those links matter especially when a buyer is comparing Chinese brands, private-label programmes and manufacturers with several domestic or overseas plants.
The 21st China International Tire Expo (CITEXPO) 2026 takes place from 2 to 4 September 2026 at the Shanghai World Expo Exhibition & Convention Center. The organiser positions it as a specialist Asia-Pacific marketplace for tires, wheels, production materials, machinery, aftermarket services and related equipment. The completed 2025 edition reported more than 400 exhibitors and 15,000 professional visitors from over 140 countries. For an importer or distributor, Shanghai is the efficient place to compare ranges and business models; the factory visit is where brand, product, plant and evidence must be connected.
Define the tire programme by actual service
Do not begin with a request for a full catalogue. A useful brief separates each operating requirement:
- passenger, SUV, light-truck, truck-and-bus, trailer, agricultural, industrial or OTR application;
- target sizes, load and speed requirements;
- axle position and service pattern where relevant;
- road surface, climate, distance, speed and duty cycle;
- mileage, fuel or energy efficiency, wet performance, noise and retread expectations;
- current benchmark product and its strongest or weakest result;
- destination countries and applicable approval, marking and labelling route;
- annual volume by size and realistic order mix;
- branded, exclusive pattern, private-label or open-market model;
- packaging, shipping, inventory and claim-handling needs.
Commercial-vehicle and OTR buyers should add vehicle load, terrain, average speed, heat generation, cuts or impacts and maintenance practice. Passenger-tire buyers may prioritise wet braking, noise, rolling resistance, wear, seasonal conditions and a coherent size ladder. EV applications can change load, torque, noise and efficiency priorities, but the word “EV” on a product display is not enough; ask what construction or test evidence supports the application.
The same brief should go to every shortlisted exhibitor. It prevents the team from comparing a premium flagship pattern with an entry-level private-label proposal and then mistaking price difference for supplier efficiency.
Separate four identities at the booth
For each product, record four different identities:
- brand owner — who controls the brand and authorises its use;
- commercial seller — which entity will quote, contract and receive payment;
- legal manufacturer and plant — where the tire is produced and which entity appears in approvals or traceability records;
- exact product — size, pattern, construction, load/speed description and internal SKU or specification.
They may belong to one group, but that should be demonstrated rather than assumed. A trading company can provide useful export and market support; a manufacturer can operate several plants; a brand may source selected patterns externally. The purchasing decision becomes clearer when those roles are explicit.
Ask which plant will make the quoted sizes, whether tooling and specifications are shared across plants, and how the seller controls any outsourced production. If supply could move to another plant, define the approval and notification process before the order, not after a shipment changes.
Compare the range as a business system
A distributor needs more than a good sample. Examine whether the size ladder, patterns and production plan can support the intended market.
Product architecture
Map each size to pattern, application and price segment. Identify gaps that would force the distributor to add another brand. Confirm which sizes are already in regular production, which require a campaign or new mould, and which are only planned.
For private label, distinguish a simple sidewall-brand change from an exclusive tread, construction or compound. The deeper the customisation, the more important ownership of moulds, design files, test evidence and minimum production runs becomes.
Market and technical evidence
Request the exact approval and test documents relevant to the destination market and product. Match entity, plant, brand, pattern or family, size range and report date. A certificate bearing a familiar company name may not cover the factory or SKU being quoted.
Ask how conformity is maintained after approval: compound or material changes, new suppliers, mould transfer, plant changes and construction updates. For performance claims, understand the test method, comparator, conditions and whether the displayed result applies to the quoted specification.
Commercial execution
Compare minimum order by size and pattern, mixed-container rules, production lead time, seasonal booking, forecast expectations, payment, shipping terms and inventory support. Then examine warranty and claims: evidence required from the distributor, inspection route, credit or replacement method, response time and responsibility for freight or field action.
A low unit price can be offset by an incomplete size range, high per-SKU minimums, slow replenishment or unresolved claims. Build the commercial comparison on one realistic container or seasonal order rather than on the supplier’s most convenient size.
Use samples to establish identity, not final quality
At CITEXPO, note the exact sidewall markings, pattern, size and display information. Ask whether the sample is current production, a development item or a show piece. If the team takes or orders samples, link each tire to the quoted plant and specification.
The next evaluation may include dimensional and visual inspection, mass, construction review, laboratory or road testing, depending on the product and market. Keep a sealed reference sample where appropriate. A sample result is evidence for that sample and configuration; it does not establish routine production consistency by itself.
For wheels, apply the same identity discipline and add material, process, finish, dimensional and load-test requirements. A tire-and-wheel package also needs verified compatibility rather than two separately attractive products.
Select the factory route after the shortlist
Shandong is a logical possibility, not a compulsory destination. Current Shandong industry information identifies Guangrao’s rubber-tire cluster as a nationally recognised specialised SME cluster, and organiser material has long highlighted the province’s tire manufacturing and export concentration. Many relevant suppliers are based in or around Dongying, Qingdao and other Shandong locations, but CITEXPO exhibitors also manufacture elsewhere in China and overseas.
First confirm the actual plant for the quoted SKU. Then group visits geographically. A Shandong trip may require flights or high-speed rail plus substantial road transfers to industrial sites; two factories in the same province can still be far apart. Protect enough time for the technical route rather than attempting several ceremonial visits in one day.
The factory host should include quality and product or process engineering, not sales alone. Request permission in advance to follow a representative tire family through the stages relevant to the programme.
What to examine inside a tire plant
Materials and compound control
Review how natural and synthetic rubber, carbon black or silica, steel cord, textile reinforcement and chemicals are identified, stored and issued. Ask how compound recipes and mixing instructions are controlled, how batches are tested, and how off-specification material is contained.
The exact formulation may be proprietary. The buyer still needs evidence that the approved recipe, raw-material status and test results are controlled for the product it will receive.
Component preparation and tire building
Follow extrusion, calendaring, bead, cord cutting and other component preparation into tire building. Observe identification, splice or dimensional controls, setup verification and how the plant prevents components for different specifications from being mixed.
For automated equipment, ask what remains operator-dependent and how alarms or deviations are handled. For manual steps, review training, work instructions and checks rather than assuming automation alone defines capability.
Curing, finishing and inspection
Examine mould identification, cure recipe control, press parameters and response to interruption. After curing, follow trimming, visual inspection, uniformity or balance testing, X-ray or other inspection where used, final grading and traceability marking.
Ask for the acceptance route for the quoted category and the disposition of nonconforming tires. A factory may use different inspection frequencies for passenger, commercial or OTR products; the proposed control plan should match the programme, not a generic presentation.
Warehouse and shipment identity
Trace a finished SKU into storage and container loading. Confirm production date policy, FIFO or other stock rotation, label control, pallet or loose-loading method and safeguards against mixing patterns, sizes or markets. Compare the sample, quotation, order and warehouse item one last time.
A six-day Shanghai-to-factory plan
1 September — align range and evidence requirements
Freeze the target size matrix, service conditions and destination-market document list. Assign brand, technical, commercial and plant-identity questions. Pre-book the suppliers whose complete range best matches the programme.
2 September — build the product longlist
Compare passenger, commercial, OTR or wheel ranges according to the defined mission. Record the four identities for each serious product and remove offers that cannot name the manufacturing plant or quoted specification.
3 September — examine evidence and business execution
Review approvals, test claims, size availability, private-label boundaries, minimum orders and claims handling. Use the technical side of the event for materials, machinery or testing questions that affect the chosen products.
4 September — close the shortlist and confirm plants
Use final meetings for document gaps, sample plans and factory agendas. Confirm travel only after receiving the production address and the names of technical hosts. Select one or two plants that represent genuinely different options or the most important remaining risk.
5 September — travel and prepare the plant review
Transfer to the selected region. During travel, compare the team’s notes and prepare questions specific to each factory. Avoid arriving with the same generic checklist for a passenger-tire brand and an OTR manufacturer.
6–7 September — inspect production and agree next tests
Follow the quoted tire family through material, building, cure, inspection and warehouse controls as access allows. Finish each visit with a written list of documents, samples, quotation revisions and unresolved issues. Define the laboratory, road, fleet or market test required before commercial approval.
Keep brand, plant and SKU linked after the trip
The sourcing file should name the seller, manufacturer, plant, brand, pattern, size family and specification revision. Purchase orders, samples, test reports and approval documents should refer to the same configuration. Any proposed change of plant, construction, compound, critical material or mould route needs a defined notification and review process.
