CHINACOAT 2026 and SFCHINA: How to Plan a Surface-Treatment Sourcing Visit

Connect coating formulation with pretreatment, electroplating and finishing at two concurrent Guangzhou fairs around one real component requirement.

A surface-performance problem can involve chemistry, application, curing, pretreatment and finishing. CHINACOAT 2026 and SFCHINA 2026 cover different parts of that chain at the same Guangzhou venue. The combination is valuable when a buyer follows one substrate or component through both shows, rather than collecting unrelated materials and processes.

Use the component requirement as the common brief

Both events run from 11 to 13 November 2026 in Area A of the China Import and Export Fair Complex. CHINACOAT covers raw materials, powder coatings, production equipment, testing and environmental technologies across five zones. SFCHINA focuses on electroplating and finishing technology, coating equipment, engineering services and special-function coating products.

Start with the real substrate, geometry, service environment and failure modes. Define appearance, colour, gloss, adhesion, thickness, corrosion resistance, wear, chemical exposure, electrical or optical function, operating temperature and destination-market restrictions. This shared brief determines which questions belong in each fair.

Choose the route by the problem being solved

Different projects need different balances between the two events.

This makes the combination problem-led rather than hall-led. The buyer can spend most of the visit in one event while using the other to test a specific interface.

Keep formulation and process decisions connected

At CHINACOAT, compare resins, pigments, additives, solvents or waterborne systems, powder technologies, curing routes, mixing, application and test methods. Ask how the proposed formulation behaves on the actual substrate and pretreatment, not only on a supplier’s standard panel.

At SFCHINA, investigate cleaning, pretreatment, electroplating, conversion coatings, deposition, polishing, wastewater handling and process control. Record how each step affects adhesion, finish consistency, corrosion performance and downstream coating.

The useful question is not which isolated product looks best. It is which sequence can repeatedly deliver the required surface on the buyer’s part.

Write that sequence in one line for every serious candidate: substrate condition, cleaning, pretreatment, deposition or primer, topcoat, cure, inspection and rework. Attach target values and responsible parties where known. Missing steps become visible before the team starts comparing prices.

Decide who should visit both shows

Coatings formulators and paint manufacturers may spend most of their time at CHINACOAT. A component manufacturer choosing a complete finish, or an OEM investigating corrosion, appearance or functional surfaces, is more likely to benefit from both. Procurement staff should be joined by someone who understands the product, process and test criteria.

If the project has no electroplating, pretreatment or finishing decision, SFCHINA may add little. If the requirement is mainly plating equipment or finishing-line engineering, SFCHINA should be the anchor and CHINACOAT a targeted check for compatible topcoats or materials.

Team composition matters as much as the route. Purchasing can compare commercial scope; product engineering defines function and appearance; process or quality staff understand preparation, control and failure evidence. Environmental, health and safety specialists may need to join discussions involving chemicals, ventilation, wastewater or process changes. One visitor rarely carries all four perspectives.

Compare evidence on the same test basis

Prepare a short evidence list before meetings: substrate preparation, application parameters, cure schedule, thickness, conditioning, test standard, acceptance threshold and number of samples. Ask suppliers to state any departure from this basis.

Supplier charts are useful for screening, but values obtained on different substrates or test methods are not directly comparable. Request technical data, safety information, regulatory statements and representative test reports, then identify which claims need a controlled sample trial.

Use failure evidence where available. Photographs, cross-sections, test history, batch records or returned parts can help suppliers distinguish poor adhesion from substrate contamination, cure variation, porosity, thickness distribution or service exposure. The show conversation should produce testable hypotheses, not an instant diagnosis from a single sample.

For a controlled trial, agree the exact substrate and preparation, application equipment, film or deposit thickness, cure or bath conditions, conditioning time, test method and acceptance threshold. A successful supplier panel is not enough if it cannot be reproduced on the buyer’s geometry and production process.

Map the whole line and its responsibilities

For equipment or turnkey discussions, map material storage, preparation, cleaning, treatment baths, rinsing, drying, application, curing, inspection, rework, ventilation and wastewater. Clarify utilities, line speed, product mix, changeover and local operating skills.

Ask who owns bath chemistry, dosing, controls, fixtures, exhaust, water treatment, commissioning, training and performance acceptance. A gap between chemical supplier, equipment builder and line integrator can create more risk than the selected coating itself.

Also record operating consumption and control points: material use, bath replenishment, water, energy, filters, cleaning, changeover, waste streams and routine analysis. These factors shape total cost, process stability and the site’s ability to operate the proposed route. Regulatory and disposal requirements must be confirmed for the actual location rather than assumed from a generic solution.

Extend the trip into a targeted process review

Use the show to shortlist raw-material suppliers, applicators, line builders or laboratories, then arrange only the visits tied to unresolved evidence. A useful visit may review pilot coating, sample preparation, analytical equipment, bath control, traceability, wastewater treatment or production changeover.

Send sample parts and the agreed test basis in advance where practical. The purpose is to observe a relevant capability or trial, not simply tour a factory.

A practical three-day show plan can keep the technical chain connected:

  • Day 1: compare coating or finishing concepts and identify the strongest complete-process candidates.
  • Day 2: follow pretreatment, application, cure, equipment and control interfaces across both fairs.
  • Day 3: revisit finalists with the common test basis, assign trials and confirm targeted post-show visits.

Projects centred on one material family may need less time. A new finishing line or persistent field failure usually benefits from a cross-functional team and scheduled technical meetings.

Leave with one verification matrix

After the fairs, combine coating and finishing candidates in one matrix. Record proposed process sequence, responsible parties, open interfaces, evidence received, sample plan, compliance questions and commercial next step.

CHINACOAT and SFCHINA form a coherent visit because their dates and venue align. The deeper value comes from testing both fairs against one surface requirement and carrying the same evidence standard into post-show verification.

Before commercial selection, translate the matrix into a staged plan: laboratory screening, representative-part trial, pilot process, acceptance testing and production release. State what evidence allows the project to move between stages and which party owns each action. This prevents an encouraging laboratory result from being treated as proof of stable line performance.

What the team should leave with

A useful combined visit should produce:

  • one component and surface-performance brief shared by both workstreams;
  • complete candidate process sequences with scope and interface owners;
  • comparable test bases and a record of where supplier evidence differs;
  • trial plans tied to representative substrates, geometry and production conditions;
  • operating, EHS, wastewater and changeover questions for the actual site;
  • targeted laboratory, applicator or equipment-builder visits with clear purposes;
  • commercial next steps that separate materials, equipment, engineering and validation costs.

That package gives coating, process, quality and purchasing teams a common view of the decision. It also makes post-show supplier discussions much more precise than asking each company for a general “best solution.”
